I don’t want to jinx anything, as I know that we have had snow in April before, but sitting here in my garden, writing this on the 19th March, in 18 degrees & sunshine, while smelling the spring flowers & listening to the birds tweeting in the trees, it is hard to imagine the truly cold winter temperatures making a reappearance. Winter this year has been TOUGH, I am sure we can all agree. After what felt like a never ending summer last year, the never ending rain over the past few months has been the absolute polar opposite. It’s hit us all hard, but It’s days like this, when we can see light at the end of the tunnel and we can look back a little more fondly & admire the true beauty of winter, when we aren’t battling with cold fingers, mud, dark evenings and frozen arena surfaces. Instead, winter photo shoots are a way of remembering just the best bits of winter – the crisp still mornings, the beautiful blanket of snow, the way breath is caught in the sunlight. So I thought it would be the perfect time to reflect on all of the beautiful snow shoots that this winter brought, before we head into the new season.

The first snowy shoot of this winter was in November, filming the 2025 Christmas video, in collaboration with Welligogs. This year’s story followed Beth & her mare Spotty as they went for a Christmas ride in the snow, only to find the entire concept was within the imagination of a little girl who had received a toy horse for Christmas. You can watch the video HERE

December brought quite a lot of wet & windy weather, so the next snow shoot was the first shoot of 2026 – with Bridget Tate in early January. This was such a beautiful crisp morning, with lots of frost & a light sprinkle of snow.

After Bridget’s shoot, I also did one with Rhiannon’s beautiful gelding on the same yard.

The following day, after some overnight snowfall, I went to photograph two sisters and their ponies. Over the years, I have done a number of shoots with this duo & it has been wonderful to capture memories as they have grown up.

More snow fell overnight & so the following day I had a trip up to north Wales, to two other sisters and their ponies. I so often get asked if grey horses photograph well in the snow & I really think they do. When clothing in muted tones is chosen, the overall effect is so soft & beautiful.

After a quick stop for lunch, I spent the afternoon with another lovely lady in North Wales, where I did a series of liberty style shots with her 3 horses. The snow for this shoot really was like the classic picture postcard. It had settled on the hedgerows, and branches, which made the backdrops even more spectacular.

After this, we had a couple of mild days, before another enormous amount of snow fell. I can only share a very small sneak peak from the shoot that took place on this day, as we were filming for the 2026 Christmas video (yes, this year, Welligogs & I got very organised, so the video has already been filmed!

The following morning, despite there having been an enormous amount of snow the day before, the temperatures had drastically risen & the snow down in the valley had mainly disappeared. what was left of the slush had re-frozen and was very dangerous, so the snow shoot planned were cancelled. As I live up a hill, we still had quite a covering, so I spent a morning just sitting in the field, it the most stunning mist, with sun beams shining through the trees, capturing photos and videos of my own horses. I will absolutely treasure these.

At the time, Mid January, I fully expected another cold snap to come before the end of the winter, but instead what followed was weeks of rain & now a turn for brighter, warmer weather, which I am hoping may stick around for a little while.

I hope you have enjoyed this little reflection. As well as these snow days, I have been doing a number of commercial & Fine art shoots, as well as taking a little quiet time before a very busy Spring/Summer season, which commences tomorrow.

So enjoy this beautiful weather while we have it & I hope you enjoy my next blog, which is coming soon, where I will reflecting on the past 10years of my business & sharing how it all started.
